Online and Offline Poker Tells

“Poker tells” are indications or signs that your opponent is showing unknowingly when he has a certain hand (good or bad). Usually those tells are based on psychological indications who can reveal a poker player. Poker tells can be divided into two sections: Online tells and Offline tells.

Online tells

  • In Limit Texas Hold’em a fast call within a board that has flush or straight draw potential can be a good indicator that this player needs one more card.
  • In Limit Texas Hold’em a fast raise after the flop usually is a sign for having top pair.
  • Usually when an online poker player takes himself more time for his next move and then makes a raise it’s less likely that he is bluffing.
  • Somebody who is raising preflop all the time, even with medium strong hands is being on Tilt.

Offline tells

  • If an inexperienced player puts his cards in front of his mouth then this usually means that he has a strong hand.
  • If an poker player is reaching for his drink way too often it’s also a sign of being nervous.
  • If a weak player keeps looking at you, generally it means he is bluffing.
  • Once a poker player starts to count his chips right after the flop, then he likely has a very strong hand.

What is limit poker about?

For beginner it is easier if they begin with limit poker. This has the advantage that the extent of the betting is predefined or “limited”. For untrained players, it is certainly easier at the beginning if they don’t have to bet their complete buy-in every round. We will now explain you what the betting rules for limit poker are.

Only a certain amount ($) can be bet. The limit of a game is always indicated, e.g., Texas Hold’em 4 $ / 8 $.

Here the height of the stake would be following :

4 $ before the flop (the Small Bet)

4 $ after the flop

8 $ after the Turn (the Big Bet)

8 $ after the River.

Every bet can be raised maximally three times, i.e. before and after the flop maximally 16 $ per betting round and after Turn and River in each time 32 $.

Limit poker labels itself how the name already says, by the fact that betting is limited. One can always bet only a certain amount, no more and no less. The bet limitation will always be mentioned in the name of the poker table that you can join. Example: Texas Hold’em 8 $ / 16$.
